In one of my previous post, I talked about the chemicals found in children’s toys. While it’s certainly important that the toys that come in contact with our babies is safe, I think ever more important are the products that touch our baby’s skin! And ours too – we can’t forget about ourselves now can we?!
Skin Deep- Cosmetic Safety Database allows you to look at thousands of products that we use on a daily basis. It rates them on a scale of 1-10 based on the amounts of chemicals in them and how harmful they might be for us. I have been looking at what type of products to buy for our baby and I think I’ve narrowed it down to a few that I think I might like.
California Baby has a low hazard score in nearly all their products from shampoo to body wash to lotion as does Baby Organic.
Of course, I haven’t actually tried these yet, but they look promising!
The following are ingredients to avoid always-if possible, containing a hazard level of 7- 10:
– 2- BROMO-2-nitrophane-1.3- DIOL, found in baby wipes, conditioner and body wash
– BHA found in diaper cream
– DMDH Hydanation found in baby wipes and body wash
– Triclosan found in toothpaste, hand soap and body wash
You can even print out a summary of the best and worst products and take it along with you on your next shopping trip!
And Mama’s- there’s even information for you! I use, and have for years, DOVE body wash. I found out it has a health hazard of 5– which isn’t too bad, but I might look into something a with less chemicals in it. Right now I’m using Earth Mama Angel Baby lotion on my skin and I absolutely love it. It’s much better than that Coco butter stuff!!
What do you use? Is it healthy? And more importantly, what do you use on your little one’s? I’d love some recommendations!
