Live Simply: De Clutter Your Life

My husband and I have a small house, but somehow we’ve managed to accumulate a lot of stuff. I really didn’t think we had a lot of  clutter until I got rid of a ton of stuff and realized I still  had loads left over! I have no idea where this stuff comes from!  Sometimes in this simple- yet so crazy mixed up world that we live in- we buy stuff because it’s nice. It’s on sale. We need it for this room or that room or to make life easier. Sometimes, just getting rid of things makes life easier!
Getting rid of stuff and de cluttering my house makes me feel more free. With less stuff, there are less things to move around, and the best part- less stuff to clean! With less stuff, I am more organized which makes me feel less stressed. I don’t know exactly how to explain it, but there is something wonderful about seeing your bathroom drawer organized, every mascara tub ( wait, why would anyone have more than one thing of mascara??) and hair tie in it’s place. Having all your clothes hung up ever-so-perfectly, making getting dressed in the morning a breeze, a pleasure! Having every bill statement in it’s correct file and every other paper thrown (recycled) away! Something simple, something peaceful about walking into a clean, de cluttered house.
Getting rid of stuff that you just. don’t. need.  Recently I made over $200 by selling my “cluttered” items on craigslist. Looking back, I don’t even remember what I sold! ( This tells me I didn’t really need these things, but they were things that I thought for sure, one day, I would most definitely need! Who am I kidding here?!)
What project will you tackle today? What can you get rid of? (Remember- donate or recycle always. Throw away never.)  How about the kids playroom? Or the craft room? Your closet? Your magazine rack in the bathroom? The hall closet? You don’t even have to start a project- there are many things you can do in just 30 seconds!

  1. Hi MamaNotes–I agree wiht you 200%; it is much more relaxing and calming to live in a clean, de-cluttered environment. This past Fall, I went through my entire house and collected everything that had not been used in the last year or two. This included kitchen stuff, vases, clothing, linens, everything. Then I had a garage sale that turned out to be really fun. Later that afternoon, I boxed up all the stuff I didn’t sell and took it to the Salvation Army. Of course, I’ll write that donation off my taxes. Since then I’ve just felt better about everthing in the house knowing that I’ve got just want I need and not much more!

  2. Found your blog googling something…and thought I should say HI! your post, one I could have written word for word rings so very true. I have been decluttering/clearning out for over a year now! With a move to a bigger house this summer I DO NOT want to pack the extra unloved, unused “things”. I can’t believe how much stuff we have accumulated, how much I have gotten rid of and how much I still have left!!!!
