A Lesson in Cow’s Milk

{In response to the comments in my post: Milk Does the Body Good}

Because, apparently, some of you are little concerned with my child drinking milk from an animal and questioned if I really knew that he was — drinking milk from an animal.Β

For goodness sake people.

Shall we have a 1st grade lesson right now? Just to make sure we’re all on the same page?

I think we should.

A cow is an ANIMAL. It says MOOOOOOO.

A cow makes milk.

Cow = Animal
Cow + Milk + Human = A human drinking milk from an animal.

A cow is an ANIMAL and a baby drinking it is HUMAN.

Please raise your hand if you have any questions.

{We drink organic cows milk here and I have no shame in saying we LOVE it! Pick your own battles in parenting… I don’t think there is anything wrong with cows milk. πŸ™‚ }

  1. Love it.

    In case you're wondering MY stance on the issue of babies drinking cows milk- my (perfectly healthy) daughter drank cows milk starting at 9 months. She hated formula and breastfeeding didn't work with her so I just put her on milk. She is fine and has no alien tentacles yet.

  2. I just had to say…

    That's all..well, and that my 3 year old still won't drink milk..from a cow..or from a human..though he did drink human milk for 16 months..I refuse to let him drink MY human milk for the next 80+ years of his life and think it would be nice if he'd drink a bit of the cow's milk every once in awhile to give his body a break from cheese. But anyway, thanks for the lesson! πŸ˜‰

  3. So I know that this post has NOTHING to do with milk but I am struggling… My husband and I are trying to get pregnant and have been for over 6 months. I am in my mind 20s and I thought it would happen right away. I am at the point where I already feel defeated and emotional. I know we haven't been trying long but I guess I just want it so bad it feels like forever. Does anyone (you) have any advice?? I really need some spirit lifting and don't know what to do.

  4. @TTGP–Girl, give yourself a year and then get you to a doctor if you don't have any luck. Keep taking your folic acid. It took us 6 months as well, and can sometimes take longer.

    And Anon is wrong, I have seen cats drink from dogs, dogs from cats, squirrels, etc. Greedy boogers and/or necessary to live.

  5. While it is true that SOME children (and adults) have difficulty digesting cow's milk, and are better off without it, that certainly does not mean that ALL of them are better off without it!

    Also, I loves me some milk. A cool glass of awesome!

    (Oh, and a lesson Dooce has illustrated for us again recently: if you blog it, the haters will come.)

  6. Come to think of it, I've seen lots of news items about animals adopting babies outside their own species and nursing them. So no, humans aren't the only ones to do that.

  7. Anonymous– Humans have SOULS. They are different from other MAMMALS for this reason. Sorry to burst your “humans are animals” bubble. Cows do not have souls.

    Samantha- I'm pretty sure the majority of HUMANS know that it's fine to give a baby cow's milk after one year of age. That's basic common knowledge in mommy land. πŸ™‚ Don't ever let commenters (especially ANONYMOUS, TOO SCARED TO SIGN THEIR NAME) get you down. I love your blog, and love seeing pics of your cute son.

    The end. πŸ™‚

  8. Oh and for the record–I LOVE milk. I have gone without my daily glass for around 4 months now. Addy has a cow's milk allergy (nuts and eggs as well) we found out when she was 3 months old. I miss it so much! I'm really hoping she grows out of the allergy very soon. πŸ™‚

    I'm sorry it's not happening as fast as you want it to. I know for every women it's different, some take much longer or shorter than others. Give it time and try to remember that God has a PERFECT plan for you and your family!!! I don't have any real advice for you, but hang in there. It WILL happen! * hugs *

  10. My husband drinks fat free organic milk from cows, I drink almond milk (love it!), and Cami (toddler) drinks goat milk. (She had mommy's milk the first year of her life.)

    Haven't ever given her cow's milk yet since their little digestive systems handle goat milk so much better. She loves it!

  11. Wow, what a concept. Humans drinkin milk. We're all mammals. We drink milk. Go figure.

    I can't wait for Tommy to be able to drink cow's milk. I was unable to breastfeed (long story) so I've been pumping every 3 hours since he was born, for the past 7 months. Unfortunately I have low supply so he gets some formula every day too. I HATE giving him formula, I hate everything about formula. The smell, the stains from spit up, the fact that everytime I look at it it reminds me of my failure as a mom not being able to provide my child with nutrition the natural way. But I'll be honest- pumping is HARD. It's getting really stressful and the thought of another 5 months is scary. I just want him to be fed primarily breastmilk for a year so I can then switch off to cow's milk. I don't want to have to give him formula full time. What I wouldn't give for cow's milk!!

    Okay, done with my novel now πŸ™‚ Keep up the great work Sam! Lucas is growing up so fast!!

  12. Two of my kids drink cow's milk occasionally. My third child doesn't like it and my fourth (18 months) has never had it.

    That being said, while I'm not against drinking milk and would never judge another for doing it, there are valid reasons for NOT drinking it.
