You Need to Pick Up the Pace, Girl

It was another beautiful day. It makes me so excited for summer!

I ran/walked about 4 miles this morning with my running partner, Ashley. We did great the first 2.5 miles and then took a little walking break. The hills were tough! I almost needed sunglasses, and even though I put sunscreen on before I left the house, I think my face got a little red. Not that I’m complaining too much- I think I could do with a little color. 🙂

I am feeling pretty down on myself about my running pace. I usually run anywhere from a 9:30-11:00min/mile pace. To some that might be fast, to some its’s slow. I try not to compare my running time to others, but sometimes when I see people running 8 min miles I am totally jealous of them.

My goal isn’t to be a fast runner. I have no desire to run 7 minute miles, but I would like to be at about a 9min pace. However, I need to focus on the total milage right now, as I train for the big 13.1 miles I’ll be doing in a couple months! (EEKK!)

I was talking to a co worker the other day about running and I told him my pace was around a 10min/mile. His reply? You need to pick it up girl. Yeah, really encouraging. It has been nagging at me for a while now and his voice makes me feel so slow and it frustrates me. I am JUST getting back into running. I know I need to give myself time to get faster and not let my pace get to me.

So I have to push his voice aside and not let him get to me!!  I have to tell myself- at least I’m running!

  1. Hey, a ten minute mile is all you need to get into the military… if it's good enough for them, why not you? I admire you running at all!

  2. I run at about a 10 minute per mile pace as well. It is hard to maintain that pace as the miles start to add up. Hold your head up high! You are out there bettering yourself and staying healthy!

  3. Haha – I would love to run a 10 min mile! I'm usually at an 11 min pace and would love to run faster – but I only started running this past Sept and never ran before that – so for now I'm happy I'm at least out there doing something! You should be too 🙂

  4. You should really change up your runs – have a focus for each run. Like one day is short and speedy, the next longer and easy, the next hills and easy, then maybe another short and speedy. When you do your “long runs” for your 1/2 training…you should just focus on distance and not speed! Be easy on yourself and don't get down on yourself at all. Keep up the good work!

Here's a good link for goals.

  5. Thanks Jen. I do have a focus for each run, Saturdays are my long runs. 🙂 I have a short speedy day too and a short normal run as well! I know you’re not suppose to focus on speed at all… but sometimes it’s hard not to. 🙂

  6. You're doing awesome! It's so easy to get caught up in comparing bits and pieces of yourself and your life to others, but why?? Life is so much more than that. Keep on keeping on, because I'm sure there are a bazillion people out there just wishing they could run as fast and strong as you!
