Morning Exercise and Bad Moods

I crave exercise. If i’m in a bad mood, a good run or a sweat at the gym from lifting weights or doing cardio will (almost) always make me feel better. I am a better person, a happier person, when I exercise (and eat well) and take time to myself to move my body.

The thing is, I usually exercise at night. It’s almost always one of the last things I do with my day.

I like this because I’m used to it, I have the most energy at night and I shower at night. However, I don’t like that all day long I am thinking about my run or workout and when/how/where I’m going to get it in. My day goes along fine and in the back of my head I’m thinking about my upcoming run and how excited I am for it.

My run yesterday was pretty crappy. I could only get in three miles, my feet hurt (I got new shoes so they’re still stiff I think) and I had to take walking breaks. I didn’t feel very good either, which was totally my fault because I accidentally ate almost an entire box of crackers that day. My tummy was not happy. That run really put me in a bad mood.

I have heard it from so many runners, and I know how true it is, some runs are really good, and some runs are really bad. Some days you can go out and run 8 miles feeling pretty strong and other days you can hardly run 3. It just depends on the day, and you can’t let a bad run get you down.

I am so excited for my 6 mile run tomorrow!

I was pretty grumpy and depressed today. No particular reason, just one of those days I guess.  Joshua is teething and I can’t put him down and I’m just tired and I need a break.  I was thisclose to buying some chocolate and pop at Target today. I knew it would make me feel better. Whenever I’m upset/sad/angry/frustrated/tired/etc, I get chocolate and it solves all my life problems. (right?) It was a big test for me today, being able to avoid that temptation, even when I was feeling depressed.

My husband got home and I was SO excited to go to the gym. I lifted heavy weights for 25 minutes and did some cardio on the spin bike and I walked out of that gym 100% happier. I came home in a good mood and ready to take care of my kids again.

I have been thinking about this all week… that I need to get my workouts done in the morning so I am happy the rest of the day. So I don’t have to spend all day anticipating and thinking about my workout. I can’t do P90X during nap time anymore or even in the mornings, it just doesn’t work. So, if I’m going to do that I still need to get it in before or after children are sleeping.

This is the perfect time to become a “morning exerciser” because the snow is gone, the days are getting longer and the weather is nicer. I can’t use the excuse of it being 10 degrees when I wake up anymore.

I want to get my workout done in the morning — think of the tone that would set for my day!

I am going to do it. I don’t know how, but I am going to do it.

If I have made the decision to stop eating candy and drinking Diet Coke, then I suppose waking up at 6am is the same thing, right? Make a decision and do it.

So. Tomorrow. 6am it is.

{Which probably means I should go to bed?}

  1. I have problems with turning to chocolate and soda also when I am stressed. Because I don't drink, I joke and say that Mt. Dew is a 'cold one.' I really need to start working harder on it! We eat healthy for the most part, but if I could cut out soda and chocolate that would be great!
Seeing that you are doing it, gives me great inspiration!

  2. Good luck! I am sure that it will go great! You are a better person than me, 6 is way to early! I am savoring my sleep in days until either the kids start getting me up early or until I go back to work. Either way, I am sleeping as long as I can now! :oP

  3. You have such amazing willpower! Staying away from chocolate is almost impossible for me. That is my main reason for running is so I can have junk 🙂 I also started running in the AM. It is so much better! I have amazing energy all morning. I use to be so grouchy and tired by 11 am. Now I power threw the whole day. Then drop into bed by 9PM instead of staying up snacking until 11.
Your doing great! It is all worth it!!

  4. good luck! Morning workouts are the best, I love running especially in the morning then I dont have to worry the rest of the day how I am going to squeeze it in. I get I go to the gym or I just run, I am happy and done for the day!!

  5. I would always rather exercise in the morning, it gives me so much energy for the day. With my current work schedule I usually can't, and I agree, your workout is on your mind all day until you do it (sometimes this is a good thing but sometimes its a bad thing if you're tired or unmotivated).

I am a much happier and nicer person when I exercise! I worked under an extremely rude and demanding boss for 2 years and I seriously think I would have screamed at him every day if it wasn't for running on my lunch breaks. Also, anything that isn't fixed by exercise is definitely fixed by chocolate!! 🙂 Hope your bad mood is long gone!
