To Run or Not to Run (?)

Next Saturday, the 28th, I’m registered for a half marathon. I registered for it about a month ago as more of a training run to do, in preparation for the half I’m doing mid June. It’s was only $10 to register, so I though it would be a fun run to do.

However, having not run in a week and having a really off week, I am clearly not ready to run 13 miles next weekend. I have a lot of work to do before the half in four weeks!! At this point, looking a week out, I know there is no way I could run this half next weekend.

But, maybe it would be good to do anyways, and just take it really, really easy with a lot of walking?

However, walking for a lot of miles is really not fun.

I won’t feel bad if I don’t go, since it really was just suppose to be a training run and it was only $10.

Then again, maybe it would be a good training run to mentally and physically prepare me for the real half next month.

What do you think I should do?

  1. Run. You always feel better when you exercise. Pack your ipod (or whatever MP3 you have) with great tunes and go for it! You might be surprised to do better than you think!!

    Plus, it'll give you a goal/motivator to get out there this week & really practice/warm up. (you've been in a slump lately right?)

  2. I think you should do whatever you feel physically and emotionally up to, and sometimes that means skipping something. On the other hand, if it were ME, I know that personally I would have a hard time getting ready for the “real” run in a month if I skipped the cheaper one instead of just walk/running as best I could. Only YOU know if you'll have that problem or not, though!

    i say go for it! sounds like it won't be too crazy since it was only $10. i would run as much as you can and plan to walk through some parts. the experience is worth it and will help you prepare so much for next time!

  4. That's a tough one… do it, but don't stress about it or put too much pressure on yourself. And have fun! I'm doing 12 1/2 miles this weekend… eek!

  5. I think you should do it. Run/walk it and you'll have no problems. I just did one a month and a half ago…could hardly run to train for it b/c of my foot and ran the whole thing with no problems. Your adrenaline will carry you a long way!!! You can get an idea of what you are capable of, how much work you want to do before your next one, play with your diet to see how much you should eat before the race, etc. SO much you could use this race for…don't waste the opportunity!!! (This is coming from one athlete to another…one runner to another!! :))
