What better way to start off your weekend than running a 12K (about 7.5 miles) on a Friday night!
I was really excited for this race. It was held in downtown Anchorage, which I’ve never ran through before (and only been to a handful of times- we never go downtown) and it was a night run that started at 7:10pm!
There were a ton of people, which I think always makes a race more fun.
My main goal for this race was to pace myself through the entire 7.46 miles. I wanted to start out a little slower than normal, maintain a good pace, and then finish strong. And, that’s exactly what I did! I was so proud of myself, I didn’t take any walking breaks! I thought I would probably take a few, but because I maintained a slow pace, I was able to keep on keepin’ on through the whole thing.
We were forced to start out super slow in the beginning because there were so many people at the starting line. At mile one, I looked at my watch and I was at almost exactly 10:00 minutes. Right on target for me! Around mile 4, I took a Cliff Energy Chew. It’s hard to say if it truly helps or not, but it doesn’t give me a stomach ache, so that’s the most important.
The run was on a beautiful course. I loved looking at all the old houses through Anchorage and running along the Coastal Trail. There were tons of spectators watching and cheering people on as well.
According to my watch and timing it with the mile markers, I kept a steady pace the entire race and sped up a little for the last 1.5 miles. There was a huge hill at mile 6.5 which was killer! I was not expecting that. I finished strong and tired, but not out of breath or dying, which is always a good thing. 🙂 I think my “un-official time” (going off my watch, there were no timing chips anyways and I completely forgot to look at the timer when I ran through the finish line!!) was 1:16(ish) which I’m happy with!
After the race, all the finishers got watermelon, bananas, cookies, water, Gatorade and pizza and beer! The food was awesome. I didn’t get any beer… or fruit, but I did smash down a cookie and two slices of cold pizza which never tasted better! It made me feel better about the $30 race fee — food!
This morning, I am sore. O.U.C.H going down the stairs. It’s mostly my knees actually. I’m looking forward to loosening up my muscles today and doing some good stretching!
