Alaska Run for Women 2011 Recap

This was my first year doing the Alaska Run for Women and it was awesome!

There were over 7,000 women who ran this race and over $165,000 was raised. Talk about GIRL POWER! There was a 1 mile course, a 5 mile timed course, a 5 mile non timed course, and what they called a “party wave,” which I think was for people who just wanted to…. “party” as they walked/ran the 5 miles and mostly meant for people who had strollers. I did the 5 mile timed.

This was an especially neat race, because it didn’t cost anything to register. They keep it that way so that no one is discriminated and anyone – no matter their financial situation- can run it. There is a suggested donation of $15. All the money goes towards breast cancer related funds, obviously. The shirts were cute too, and I actually bought one!

Some of the potty’s were decorated. This one was my favorite. The sign said “Save the Gals, Nurse the Baby.” Because, didn’t you know, that women who breastfeed their children have a decreased risk of getting breast cancer!

Yoga warm up before the race. Seriously am in love with thousands of women getting together to do this. I want to hold a meet up like this every Saturday morning. Wouldn’t that be amazing?

I loved seeing all the pink and running in a big sea of women. This was the first race I’ve done where I ran with a large crowd through the entire thing. Usually I’m somewhere in the middle of the pack, but with so many people running this race I was literally running with hundreds of girls the entire time! So fun.

The food afterwards was awesome.  Water bottles, chips, oranges & bananas, Odwalla bars, Odwalla drinks, bagels…. I was seriously impressed with the food.

A super fun race and a fabulous way to start off my morning. One I will definitely be doing again!

Did you run any races this weekend?
Do you like Odwalla drinks? I’m not really a fan.
