Stairway Gallery Wall with Black Rails

I think I’ve got my stairway galley wall just about finished.

I had this idea to paint all of our stair walls black. I was a little nervous about this idea, but when I asked my mom (my go-to person on any decorating questions) and she replied with a positive answer, thinking it might look good, I got really excited and decided to go for it. I had to convince my husband a bit, but I think we’re both happy with how it turned out. It definitely was a bold move, though!

I I love the black frames against the black stair rails and I think it really makes everything stand out and look sharp and clean. I love having two walls full of family pictures!

The nice thing about this is that I can add picture frames at any time. It’s an ever evolving wall, really. Pictures can go out in either direction, or up. I can also easily switch out a picture if I want, or change a location of a frame. I didn’t measure either wall, I just nailed and hung.

I can easily spray paint any frames too, so they all match. I was going to do mis-matched frames, but I decided I liked all black better.

Every so often the frames get titled a little bit. Probably from the shutting of doors- or something. I find myself walking down the stairs and moving a frame a tad bit to the left or right so it’s straight again. Ha. I think I really love it though- hodge podge family collection of pictures. Woohoo!

What do you think? Ever thought of painting your rails black??

  1. Love it! I have the same type of photo collage on my living room wall. There is this great sticky, clay-like stuff you can stick to the back of the frames to keep them in place. Looks great!
