I Think We’re Potty Training

I guess we’re potty training right now!!

Exciting. Exhausting.

It’s been two days so far.

It all started on Tuesday night, around 11pm, when Lucas woke up crying. He asked me to change his diaper (never, ever, has he done this before) and he told me that tomorrow (Wednesday) he wanted to wear his underwear. Honestly, I thought he would forget about it, but Wednesday morning he woke up and the first thing he said was that he wanted to wear his underwere!

A few weeks ago, while at Target, we picked out some new underwear for him. He is really into race cars right now, so I got him some “Cars”underwear. To him, it’s just cars. He doesn’t know it’s actually a Disney character race car.

So — On Wednesday, we vetoed our morning plan and decided to stay home. It’s been hard being home the last two days. We are generally always out doing something every morning! We’ve been keeping busy playing in our backyard, doing art, and playing tinkertoys.

These things are awesome. A older couple friend of ours gave these to us. I guess he bought them many years ago at Costco. Lucas has really been enjoying them!

Lucas is doing really well with this whole potty training thing. He has had 2 accidents in his underwear the last two days and every other time he has gone in the toilet. We left the house twice today for about 30 minutes each time and he stayed dry. He also woke up from nap with a totally dry diaper!

Tomorrow morning, we have plans at 10 that I am not canceling. I still haven’t decided what I’ll do with Lucas — if I should put a diaper on him or let him wear his underwear. He really doesn’t want to wear his diaper. I don’t want to force him either and go in the wrong direction, so I think I’ll let him wear his underwear and I will just bring an extra change of pants. No big deal.

We’ll see if progress continues and if this is truly really going to happen!

  1. Thats so exciting!

Sounds a lot like Eb. One day she just decided to wear her undies and go to the toilet and only one or two accidents later she is completely TT is great : )

The first few times going out of the house, maybe put him in pull-ups? Then after that undies (and spare change of clothes!!).

Always source out where toilets are and quickest route to them before going out. you'll notice in a few weeks that he can hold his bladder a lot longer. The first few weeks Eb went to the toilet every hour or so, but now a few months later its the same as a adult (almost) every few hours, so sometimes when out and about she waits until she's home which can be handy.

    Yay, well done Lucas!

  2. Walmart sells these little cloth training pants-three pair for $6. That's what I put my son in when we go out of the house, because it can basically hold one pee. He feels like it's the same as regular undies, and I make a big deal out of it (Look! We are going to the store, so you are wearing your special outside undies!) so he likes them.

He sounds so ready…telling you that he wants to wear underwear is amazing!! Orion changes with the day…one day it's undies, the next he wants to wear his diaper. Gah.

  3. My oldest was the same way! At 27 months she said she didn't want to wear diapers anymore and wanted her underwear. It's been 2.5 years and we've maybe had 5 accidents since them! Go Lucas!

  4. He sounds ready, congrats! It's so much nicer to deal with undies than diapers 🙂

We always go with a change of pants and undies. I kind of did the all or nothing approach for daytime–no more diapers at all, ever! (Just at night.) It works.

  5. Yay! Go Lucas!

It IS Exhausting though, I'm totally with you there. I also never knew I had it in me to get so excited about peeing on a plastic duck potty 😀

We're a couple weeks in and we have good & bad days but I can't complain about only having to change one kid in diapers now!
