When I decided to Paint my Pantry at 10pm

Whoever lived in my house before us must have been old or something, because the pantry shelves were covered in a rose floral type of contact paper. {The bathroom drawers and kitchen drawers all have this same decoration too.} Not my cup of tea. So, something I’ve been wanting to do for a while now, was put on new contact paper.

Isn’t that gross?
My husband was out of town so that night I knew I would either be extra lazy and lay around watching Lifetime movies, or be super productive and spray paint something or try new decorations.
At 10:00pm, I started this project: {which I thought would be a 20 minute thing.}
First, I put down the contact paper I bought at the store. They didn’t have a very wide selection, so I just grabbed something that I thought would be okay for now. I realized this was pretty hard to put on while the shelf was inside the pantry, so I took it out.
After I took the shelf out, I realized I could take all the shelves out! (Ha.) That was when I came to the other realization that I could and should go ahead and paint the inside of the pantry as well. It was nasty and probably hasn’t had a fresh coat of paint since the original owners had it.
I had to take everything out of my pantry.
My poor kitchen.
THEN, I realized I didn’t like the contact paper and I could do something even better like PAINT the shelves! I decided to use the same color that is on a wall in our living/dining room. If I would have planned this out better I would have bought new paint for the shelves and painted the inside a fun color instead of just white, but this is what happens when you start a project at 10pm and only have existing paint to work with.
By midnight, I had everything painted and, of course, I had to let the shelves dry overnight.
The next morning, since my kitchen was in the shambles, my kids and I went out to eat at a bagel shop. I didn’t know when my husband was coming home that day, but I was just praying it was sometime after nap. He would have freaked if he would have came home with the pantry spread out everywhere. We went to get bagels and then to a park — such a pretty (and chilly!) fall morning.

Yep, snow on the tips of the mountains!!

Thankfully the boys took a decent nap and I was able to put everything back together!
I had everything cleaned before hubby came home and he had no idea. 🙂
Now the trick is keeping food off that bottom shelf so kids don’t get in to it….

  1. Looks great! I sometimes do late-night spur-of-the-moment projects too. Even just re-organizing the kitchen cupboards can occasionally take place after 10. Not the norm by any stretch of the imagination, but it has happened a few times over the years.
