One Year Ago Today

One year ago, at exactly this moment, I was having contractions and laboring at home. Five days after my due date, this was finally IT. My mother-in-law and mom were both staying at my house, Lucas was sleeping, and I was laboring in and out of the shower and trying to get a little bit of sleep. I woke up my husband and we left for the hospital.

A few hours later, I delivered the most perfect baby boy. A few hours after that, we came home.

{His birth story is HERE. I just re-read it, a year later. I am so glad I wrote that down, I forgot so much of it!!}

I can’t believe it has been an entire year since he has entered our lives. As fast as it’s gone, it almost feels like he has always been a part of our life. He is such a happy baby. He loves his brother so much. He is just so perfect and I am so blessed and so happy and so so so thankful and grateful that he is mine.

I remember when he came out of me – we didn’t know if it was a boy or girl – and they said “it’s a boy.” My husband and I just looked at each other and we both had the same thoughts going through our heads, our expression could show that. Another boy? Oh my gosh. Two boys. Well, this will be fun. Right? Two brothers. I remember thinking holy crap, another boy. What am I going to do with another boy???

The Lord knows me SO well. He knows that I need to stay active and busy. He knows that I need to get outside for fresh air, vitamin D and exercise. Without my active and energetic boys who “force” me to get out some days, I don’t know where I would be. If I had children that didn’t like going outside or who didn’t make me get out of the house, I know I would be a depressed person. I bet that’s why He gave me two wild and active boys — because I need them.

Joshua is such a happy boy. He loves pasta and fruit, he is like this close to walking, he loves sitting in the wagon and going for walks, he loves water, he sleeps 13 hours at night (with 2 wakings) and takes a 3 hour nap daily, he loves sitting in the front seat of a shopping cart, he loves board books – especially ones with flip pages, he loves rolling cars on the ground, he loves strawberries, he loves being outside, going down the slide, climbing up the play structure, crawling on the grass, he loves being chased down the hallway after bath time, he loves taking a bath, he think’s his big brother is really funny, he loves getting his teeth brushed (he has 8 teeth. I am preventing cavities. I don’t care if they will fall out anyway) he loves pushing chairs around the family room, he loves climbing on anything, he loves his pacifier, he loves toys and he loves life.

One year ago today, I was in a lot of pain. A lot. My husband left me to labor in the shower while he went to get a coffee. He was tired, you know. {I’m not mad at him for it, I don’t care really, but I think I’ll always remember that. =)} I had a nurse and a midwife deliver my baby, people I didn’t really know that well, in a hospital in Alaska that I had never toured before. I hurt real bad, but only for a little bit.

  1. Oh my goodness Samantha… I LOVE LOVE LOVE your reasons for “having been given” two boys! You are awesome and this is why I love reading your blog. I sure wish we could be “in real life” friends. 🙂 ❤

  3. Happy Birthday Joshua!
    And for all your reasons the Lord gave you boys, I have the exact opposite reasons of why the Lord gave me 3 calm, non-outdoorsy girls! 😉

  4. Happy Birthday Joshua!
    Can't believe it's been a year!

    My daughter HATES going outside! Now I'm going to have a little boy. I hope they won't be too different. Luckily she'll be in school starting Next September and he'll be 9 months old. So if he wants to be an active outdoorsy boy then we can play outside while she's in school.
