Homemade Haircut

I finally finally finally gave Lucas a hair cut, all on my own.

I bought a little kit at Costco that had a razor in it, with two combs and a good pair of scissors.

I thought I was going to use the razor, but I didn’t.

I really had absolutely no plan. I had (have, still do) no idea what I’m doing. I cut the back and the bangs straight across and then the other pieces I just sort of combed up and cut. He was my “guinea pig.”

I put him on the bar stool while he was watching a show and gave him a lollipop.

I did it super fast. I didn’t take much off,  just a little trim which was really what he needed.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well I did!

Any un-even lines are suppose to be there. It’s called layering. 🙂

This saved me $14!! It cost me about $14 to get Lucas’s hair cut. That x 2 and going every 2-3 months is really going to add up. I think I can get the hang of this hair cutting thing!

Next is Joshua…

I have no idea how I’m going to get him to sit still.

  1. Looks like you did a great job!! Personally, I think the key to home haircuts is being quick!

  2. Looks good. If I had done it he wouldn't have had any hair left. I would have cut so crooked that I would have had to keep evening up each side until it was all gone!

  3. You did a great job!!!! I have always had to cut Nicholas' hair. He has some major sensory issues and he freaks out when other people touch his head. I found that sitting him in the stool with my iPad ( there is a really n eat hair cutting app that he LOVES ) works WONDERS!!!! Though, I think I will wait to cut his hair until it warms up. Does it EVER warm up here??? Lol!!! I think I have realized that Eagle River gets colder than Anchorage… and of course, we found a house we loved in Eagle River…. it was -12 out there today!!!!

  4. That looks great! I recently had to do the exact same thing… to a little girl, though. I think boys would be harder, though (and soon I'll find out because my son is 11 months old and his hair is growing). I wasn't brave enough to cut my daughter's hair until I saw a post with step-by-step instructions on how to do it, lol. Here's the boy's version in case you're interested! http://shwinandshwin.blogspot.com/2010/10/boys-cuts.html

(Keeping kids still… sooo hard! I recommend rewards like lollipops.)

  5. I love it!! I could never do that- we shave our 2.5 year olds hair in the summer but I pay $20 per haircut in the winter. Which is ridiculous. Maybe I should get the husband to start cutting his hair in the winter too…

  6. We have our 18 month old on the floor while one parent is in front of him giving fruit snacks, playing patty cake, and the other is going at him with the razor. He has started to sit still on his own though since we keep playing this game every few weeks. Good luck!
